Box Office: A Depressing State of Affairs

Box Office: A Depressing State of Affairs

Despite being in nearly 2000 theatres, this weekend’s only widely released newcomer, the faith-based “The Identical,” crashed and burned with a mere $1.86 million take, which is about half of what was projected. Summer 2014’s two big bombs, “Expendables 3” and  “Sin City 2,” both dropped out of the top ten completely in just a few weeks.

Holding at number one with another $10 million is “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which will sit at $295 million by Monday. That means that by next weekend, Hollywood will finally have a $300 million hit on its hands.

Per Deadline, here are the top five:

1). Guardians of the Galaxy (DIS), 3,221 theaters (-241) / $2.76M Fri. / 3-day cume: $10.2M (-40%) / Total cume: $295M / Wk 6

2). Let’s Be Cops (FOX), 2,932 theaters (-78) /$1.526M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.2M (-37%) / Total cume: $66.7M /Wk 4

3). If I Stay (WB), 3,157 theaters (+154) / $1.52M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.042/Total cume: $38.9M/ Wk 3

4). Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (PAR), 3,273 theaters (-270) / $1.47M Friday / 3-day est. cume: $5.5M (-54%) / Total est. cume: $174M / Wk 5

5.) The November Man (Relativity), 2,776 theaters (-) / $1.23M Fri. / 3-day cume: $4.164 (-47%) / Total cume: $18M / Wk 2

Things are unlikely to improve much next weekend. I doubt anyone was screaming for a sequel to “Dolphin Tale” or to watch Idris Elba slum in the thriller “No Good Deed,” which can’t even be made to look thrilling in its trailer.
