Cartoon Network Censors Gay Kiss in Episode of ‘Clarence’: ‘Maybe One Day’

Cartoon Network planned to feature its first gay kiss on an episode of “Clarence,” their new animated series about a young boy who is optimistic about everything, but decided to replace the gesture between the characters with a peck on the cheek instead.

The show’s writer, Stephen Rothbell, revealed on Twitter what was supposed to happen before the network reportedly pulled the plug.

“Originally the guy had flowers and they kissed on the mouth,” said Rothbell, who has since changed his Twitter profile to private.

He then moved to Tumblr, where he claimed to be surprised by the “minor throwaway” but was pleased with the kiss that did make it to the final edit. Rothbell then wrote: “Maybe one day the main character can be gay and it won’t be a big deal.”

Here’s an example of what people in the Twittersphere are saying about the gay kiss:

@cartoonnetwork ‘s newest episode on Clarence has a gay couple in it. Happy that SOMEONE is teaching kids that it is normal. #CNPride
