Beauty-tip seeking teenagers showed off their painful, bruised lips on social media this week after attempts to undertake the “Kylie Jenner Challenge” proved unsuccessful.
Jenner, the 17-year-old star of the hit reality TV series Keeping up with the Kardashians, boasts famously full lips. Scott Disick, Jenner’s co-star and husband of Kourtney Kardashian, at one point revealed on the show that it takes Jenner 40 minutes to get them right every day.
So, it came as no surprise when “#KylieJennerChallenge” began trending on Twitter, a game in which teenagers attempted to achieve Jenner’s signature look by placing their mouths in glass bottles and sucking hard, causing their lips to swell.
Also unsurprising were the results of the challenge; a lot of dispirited teenagers showing off their injured, swollen lips on social media.

Dermatologist Dr. Dendy Englelan told Seventeen magazine that the challenge could cause serious health problems if repeatedly attempted.
“The new trend in trying to DIY lip plumping is quite concerning,” Dr. Engelman said. “Not only can significant pain, swelling, and bruising result from these suction techniques, but there is potential risk for scarring and permanent disfigurement with repeated attempts.”
Jenner responded to the social media furor on Tuesday by issuing a pair of tweets, but by then, the damage was done:
I'm not here to try & encourage people/young girls to look like me or to think this is the way they should look. (Cont…)
