WATCH: Colin Farrell Reveals He Was Once a Suspect in Attempted Murder Case

Actor Colin Farrell revealed he was once a suspect in an attempted murder case in an appearance on The Tonight Show Thursday night.

The Irish actor appeared on the show with fellow actor Vince Vaughn and host Jimmy Fallon to promote the second season of gritty cop show True Detective, premiering Sunday night on HBO.

Fallon, Farrell and Vaughn played a game called “True Confessions,” in which each had to read a statement while the others “interrogated” them to determine whether the statement was true or false. While Fallon and Vaughn read innocuous admissions, Farrell’s was a bit darker.

“When I was a late teen, I got brought in for questioning as a suspect in an attempted murder,” Farrell said.

While Fallon and Vaughn grilled him over the claim, Farrell said some things that indicated it could actually be true: “I saw a photofit of the guy who actually did the crime, and it looked remarkably like me. And for a second, because I had a blackout that night, I wondered, ‘Could I have done such a thing?'”

“I’m a little nervous to push too hard, ’cause we might have a guy who got away with murder here,” Vaughn joked.

But the claim turned out to be true.

Says Farrell:

“I was supposed to bring my mother to the airport. I was in Sydney, Australia, I was pulled in by the cops and they showed me a photofit of the pencil sketch of the guy who had attempted to murder this other gentleman, had beat him up and left him in his own apartment and set the apartment on fire and split, thereby leaving the guy to burn to death, and it was me. They said, ‘What do you think about that picture?’ and I went, ‘I think I’m in trouble.’ Yeah, it was terrifying. I was there for about six hours, and then thankfully a friend of mine had kept a journal, and that particular night and that particular time we were at a party at the other side of town doing ecstasy, so…”

Meanwhile, Fallon revealed that his grandmother once used mayonnaise to free his stuck head from a fence, while Vaughn once “defiantly commanded” the title role in a theater performance of The King and I.
