Jaden Smith doesn’t shy away from making risky fashion choices.

So it seemed like no big deal when the 17-year-old son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith showed up to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s nuptials in a full-body, all-white Batman suit. Smith also wore the Batman get-up to prom last month.

In an interview with GQ, Smith explained how he chooses what to wear every day.

“I’m just expressing how I feel inside, which is really no particular way because everyday it changes how I feel about the world and myself, but I like wearing super drapey things so I can feel as though I’m a super hero, but don’t have to necessarily wear super hero costumes everyday,” Smith told the magazine.

As for why he wore the Batman suit to the West-Kardashian wedding: “I wore the Batman suit to heighten my experience at the wedding and prom which was fun, but also at the wedding I felt as though I needed to protect everyone there and needed to have the proper gear to do so.”

The young Smith recently made GQ‘s list of the 20 Most Stylish Men Alive, so he must be doing something right.

Maybe it’s the fashion-forward stars he looks up to:

“My style icons are Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Superman and Kanye West,” Smith told the magazine.

When he’s not wearing superhero costumes to formal events, the young Smith can be seen wearing dresses in public and philosophizing on Twitter. Smith also acts and records music; he’s currently working on the sequel to his 2010 remake of the Karate Kid alongside Jackie Chan.
