In a candid new video titled “You Look Disgusting,” former model and London-based beauty blogger Em Ford is highlighting the realities of online bullying from the perspective of a victim.
Ford, who reports having struggled with acne for many years, started posting makeup free photos of herself to her social media accounts about three months ago.
In that time, the images have transpired into more than 100,000 comments from people around the world, and they are all talking about her face.
“I can’t even look at her,” said one critic, while another simply wrote, “You look disgusting.”
The comments drastically shifted after Em shared portraits of herself wearing makeup, and she reviewed comments like, “amazing,” and “so perfect,” while others still didn’t approve and left comments like, “Too much make-up,” “This is misleading,” or “You are so ugly. That’s why you wear makeup.”
Ford highlights the disparities in the video, which can be found below, and it has been viewed more than eight million times within one week.
The video’s anti-bullying tag, #YouLookDisgusting, has also gained momentum on Twitter this past week.
“One challenge many face today,” Ford wrote to People, “is that as a society, we’re so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that it can be hard to remember the most important thing – you are beautiful.”
