Operation Harpoon, a Facebook page that digitally alters photos of plus-size women to make them appear slimmer, sparked outrage online this week.
The controversial page describes itself as “a collaborative art project open to interpretation,” and people aren’t taking it lightly.
Plus-sized model Tess Holliday, who is apparently a regular feature, spoke out about the page on Friday.
“I think [the Facebook page] is pathetic, and their Photoshop skills are seriously lacking,” Holliday told Us Weekly. “I actually laughed out loud [when I saw the pictures of myself].”
“The versions of me smaller aren’t even anatomically correct and my limbs are all stretched out like I’m made of Play-Doh…It’s ridiculous,” she added.
Holliday rose to prominence with her #effyourbeautystandards campaign, which promotes positive body image, and has since asked her followers to boycott the page and any others like it.
“It’s abominable that this [Facebook page] is using my image without permission to promote themselves,” she told E! News.
Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, Meghan Trainor, and plus-sized model Ashley Graham were also targeted by the account.
The images are accompanied with the hashtags #SkinnyAcceptance and #ThinnerBeauty, as well as comments like, “Meghan Trainor might be a lot more popular if she was what the industry wanted her to be! Not all about that Bass [sic] huh?”
Operation Harpoon has since been flagged and taken down by Facebook site administrators.
