Undertaking a revival of former NBC sitcom Community was a costly venture for Yahoo, and might hamper the company’s future plans to compete in the world of online original programming.
Variety reports Ken Goldman, Chief Financial Officer for Yahoo, explained during the tech giant’s quarterly earnings call this week that his company lost $42 million last quarter, and specifically blamed the video division for “what went wrong.”
Goldman specifically singled out Community, a show starring Joel McHale and Gillian Jacobs, which was cancelled after five seasons on NBC, but later picked up by Yahoo during an attempt to compete with streaming giants, such as Netflix and Amazon.
Season six of the sitcom ran exclusively on Yahoo video platform Yahoo Screen, beginning in March.
In addition to Community, two other original Yahoo shows, Sin City Saints and Other Space, failed to become profitable.
Goldberg reportedly explained that monetizing the shows failed to work the way the company hoped it would, but did not rule out the possibility of the company testing the waters of original content in the future.
Around the same time news of Yahoo’s disastrous quarter was breaking, Community creator Dan Harmon launched what would turn into an hours-long meltdown on Twitter.
Admittedly drinking, Harmon shared his thoughts on “PROFITABLE” rap song ideas, before laying into fans and others.
I have two sincere pitches for the hip hop industry that will sound like a bit, but are sincerely offered pieces of PROFITABLE advice

and yes I am drunk but that's what happens on airplanes and it doesn't make my advice bad

I'm now going to scroll through my responses and block everyone that said even the slightest critical thing. Good luck!

Harmon’s self-proclaimed drunk-tweeting carried over into the wee hours of Wednesday morning:
Reddit is a dangerous place for narcissistic megalomaniacs. I wish I could just be a dad that made an R2D2 toilet https://t.co/MgSA4JeLs6
