WATCH: First Trailer for History Channel’s ‘Roots’ Remake

The first trailer for the History Channel’s remake of the iconic American slavery drama Roots was released this week.

The eight-hour update of the 1977 ABC series stars Oscar winners Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Anna Pacquin (True Blood), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), and rapper Tip “T.I.” Harris.

Like the original, the series is based on Alex Haley’s 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. Original series star LaVar Burton will return to co-executive produce the remake.

“Nearly 40 years ago I had the privilege to be a part of an epic television event that started an important conversation in America,” Burton told Entertainment Weekly. “I am incredibly proud to be a part of this new retelling and start the dialogue again, at a time when it is needed more than ever.”

Roots bows on Monday, May 30 at 9pm on the History Channel. Watch the trailer above.
