Warren Beatty is back for the first time in 15 years with the first trailer for Rules Don’t Apply, in which the 79-year-old veteran actor-writer-director plays eccentric billionaire multi-hyphenate Howard Hughes.
“You ain’t seen nothin’ yet,” Beatty as Hughes promises in the trailer, which was released online Thursday.
Rules Don’t Apply marks the Oscar-winning Beatty’s return to the director’s chair for the first time since 1998’s Bulworth, for which he was also nominated for Best Screenplay. His last acting appearance in a film came in 2001’s Town & Country opposite Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn.
Here’s the official synopsis for Beatty’s latest, from 20th Century Fox:
The unconventional love story of an aspiring actress (Lily Collins), her determined driver (Alden Ehrenreich), and the eccentric billionaire (Warren Beatty) who they work for. It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her personal driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), only two weeks on the job and also from a religiously conservative background. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have an intimate relationship with a contract actress. But Hughes’ absurd behavior intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.
Beatty brought in a star-studded cast for the film, including Matthew Broderick, Ed Harris, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Candice Bergen, Oliver Platt, Steve Coogan and Louise Linton.
In addition to directing and acting in the flick, Beatty also penned the screenplay from his own original story.
Rules Don’t Apply is in theaters November 23.
