Michelle Obama got a boost from Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, who produced an introductory video ahead of the First Lady’s speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night.
The brief two-minute clip, set to Pharrell Williams’s hit song “Freedom,” featured short clips of children praising Michelle Obama as an inspirational leader.
Abrams has been a vocal supporter of Clinton’s bid for the presidency.
In an interview with the Daily Beast in February, the 50-year-old writer-producer-director called Clinton “the strongest candidate” in the race.
“She does have the experience and the politics,” Abrams said. “She is compassionate, and right. When I look at the people who need the support that aren’t necessarily getting it, I believe that she would provide that.”
“That is really the way that we have to approach how to vote: look around and ask yourself, who needs to be brought up?” the director added. “Who needs to be emphasized? Who needs compassion? And I find that that’s something that she’s got.”
Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, each contributed $500,000 to Clinton’s campaign last June, making the couple one of Hollywood’s biggest financial supporters of the Democrat presidential nominee. Other Hollywood heavyweights who donated $1 million to Clinton’s campaign include director Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks head Jeffrey Katzenberg.
In October 2015, Abrams hosted President Obama at a $33,400-per-person fundraiser to benefit the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee. The event raised around $750,000 for the Democrats.
