Watch: Tom Cruise Is a Drug-Smuggling Pilot in ‘American Made’ Trailer

“All this is legal?” “If you’re doing it for the good guys.”

Tom Cruise plays real-life drug-smuggler and DEA operative Barry Seal in the first trailer for Universal’s American Made, released online this week.

The Baton Rouge, Louisiana-born Seal was an airline pilot for TWA in the late 1960s and early 1970s before he took a more lucrative position as a drug-runner for the infamous Medellin cartel. Seal became an informant for the DEA and was caught up in the Iran-Contra scandal in the mid-1980s.

Doug Liman (Bourne trilogy) directs American Made, re-teaming with Cruise for the second time since 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow. Gary Spinelli (Stash House) penned the screenplay.

The film co-stars Jesse Plemons, Sarah Wright, Caleb Landry Jones, Domhnall Gleeson, Lola Kirke and Jayma Mays.

American Made is in theaters September 29.
