Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin described President Donald Trump as a “dumb guy” with an “observable psychiatric disorder” in a feature interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week.
Sorkin, who wrote the first four seasons of the multiple Emmy Award-winning political drama The West Wing in the early 2000s, said he wouldn’t consider casting a character similar to Trump in any potential remake of the series.
“Trump is exactly what he looks like: a really dumb guy with an observable psychiatric disorder,” he said, adding that he would instead have the African-American actor Sterling K. Brown playing a president in “some kind of jam, an emergency, a very delicate situation involving the threat of war or something.”
Sorkin revealed that he has a standing offer from NBC to reboot the series, which ran for seven seasons between 1999 and 2006.
The writer — who makes his directorial debut with the true story-based poker drama Molly’s Game this month and previously wrote films including The Social Network, Moneyball and Steve Jobs — endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race, while describing Trump as a “thoroughly incompetent pig with dangerous ideas, a serious psychiatric disorder, no knowledge of the world and no curiosity to learn.”
“The [Ku Klux] Klan won last night,” Sorkin wrote following Trump’s victory last November. “White nationalists. Sexists, racists, and buffoons. Angry young white men who think rap music and Cinco de Mayo are a threat to their way of life (or are the reason for their way of life) have been given cause to celebrate.”
Most recently, Sorkin also used an acceptance speech at the Writer’s Guild of America Awards as a chance to attack Trump, arguing that he was “out of touch” and offering a defense of coastal elites.
“If you find it mind-boggling that living and working in the two largest cities in America makes you less than a real American, you are not the one who’s out of touch,” he said.
