On the eve of Thanksgiving, which is right in the heart of one of the airline’s busiest travel seasons, MSBNC’s Chris Matthews made two assertions: 1. The outrage over TSA pat downs is the result of conservatives who are “ginning up” the controversy for political gain. 2. That the same conservatives who are supposedly “ginning [things] up” would go nuts “‘five minutes’ after a terrorist attack if the Obama administration hadn’t set up strict security measures.”
These assertions are as silly as they are false, and reading them actually makes me wonder why the same news outlet that suspended Keith Olbermann over political contributions won’t at least think about suspending Matthews for contributing nothing meaningful to political dialogue in this country.
For the record, conservatives aren’t looking for political gain with the TSA issue, they’re looking for safety. They realize the truth of something that obviously eludes Matthews, and that is that neither a screening system nor a pat down system are worth their weight in salt if they are primarily used to check Christians and Roman Catholics while giving Muslims a pass. In other words, the whole TSA pat down saga is ridiculous because it’s governed by a politically correct orthodoxy that leads to pat downs of the people terrorists want to blow up instead of pat downs of the population that produces terrorism to begin with.
Just think about this: The TSA has singled out six year-olds, protestant Caucasians and nuns for pat downs while giving a pass to Muslim women in full Muslim garb. This skewed approach to reality shames the innocent people who are being patted down because they know they are being made an example while those who celebrate terrorism as a form of jihad get to board planes without so much as a brief question and answer session. (And in the irony of ironies, pictures have even been taken of a Muslim woman, part of the very group that has been allowed to opt out of pat downs, conducting a pat down on a Roman Catholic woman.)
Since the pat downs target the wrong population, they bring no added level of safety whatsoever. Which is why Rush Limbaugh recently said: “[Although] the examples [of pat down abuse] are legion … and they’re all over the place, … the number of terrorists caught by the TSA is at zero.”
This is why conservatives are mad. And it’s also why they’ll still go nuts “five minutes” after the next airline terror attack even though these “strict security measures” have been in place. For they know they’ve been sold a bill of goods via pat downs that are purposely structured to protect the little feelings of terrorists while humiliating law abiding citizens who yearn to live life free of terrorism’s threat.
