When 2012 comes around, the number-one job of the MSM will be to keep the focus off of President Obama. He’s a failed president and recent polling that shows him unable to hit 50% against every potential GOP challenger proves the people only need an acceptable alternative as a reason to fire him. Everyone on the Left, including the MSM, knows this and knows what has to be done. And so the plan will be to make sure 2012 doesn’t become a referendum on the incumbent by keeping an intense and hostile narrative focused on Republicans, specifically the Republican challenger.
How will they do this?
With much of the same nonsense they used in 2008. If you remember, we had an MSM obsessed with Tina Fey, tanning beds, wardrobes, the tax records of private citizens, and what wasn’t shouted at a Republican rally instead of what was said at the rally by a Republican. Furthermore, nothing sucks the oxygen away from Obama’s failure like Politico’s Ben Smith playing the race card, Stephen Colbert Alinskying a Republican Senator, or the claim that someone’s a liar. These last three things are happening right now — and this is where these insidious, self-appointed fact-checkers come into play.
It’s important to keep in mind that media bias is rarely rarely “how” the media covers something and usually “what” they choose to cover. And the corrupt MSM loves them some biased fact-checkers. If you want to know why, look no further than PolitiFact’s “Lie of the Year.” It’s a two-fer for Leftists in that it trashes Sarah Palin and defends ObamaCare. Naturally this spread across the MSM like a pants-on-fire, except –oh wait, maybe Palin didn’t lie.
See what Politifact did there? And here’s the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto, no Palin cheerleader, calling PolitiFact something romantically close to liars on this matter.
Politifact took the Left’s side on this issue and intentionally turned opinion into fact so that it could be used as cover by the MSM to “objectively” call Palin a liar and defend Obama’s government take over of healthcare. Whoops! Did I just say “government takeover of healthcare”? Because that was another of PolitiFact’s “Lies of the Year.”
See what PolitiFact did there … again?
According to Google, PolitiFact’s only awarded two Lies of the Year and it’s no coincidence that both defended President Obama’s center-piece of legislation and thrashed Republicans.
This is the same PolitiFACT that defended Obama from a SNL skit. The same PolitiFACT that somehow determined Obama’s failed stimulus “saved” a million jobs. The same PolitiFACT who just got busted by our own Charlie Sykes for using a Soros-funded source in an attempt to discredit him. In fact, PolitiFact’s lies and biases are so bountiful, they’ve kept a whole website in business devoted to chronicling them. They also won a Pulitzer, which should tell you everything you need to know.
Now, I’m more than willing to stand with Mark Steyn and Sarah Palin and argue that Death Panels were real. Furthermore, anyone who doesn’t think ObamaCare represents a government takeover of health care, doesn’t want to. However, I do see and acknowledge the point of view from the other side. The Right and Left simply look at these definitions differently.
PolitiFact, however, does not. PolitiFact will tell us what is and is not a fact. PolitiFact will decide what is and is not truth. And worse… the MSM will gleefully use PolitiFact as a weapon marked “objectivity” against the Right over and over and over again.
But again, it’s usually not “how” PolitiFact covers something, it’s “what” they cover. Less than an hour ago I went to PolitiFact’s front page and what did I find? Something that looks awfully close to the front page’s of other left-wing outlets (Politico, Mediaite) disguised as “objective.

Take a close look and you’ll see that PolitiFact is not only viralizing Jon Stewart’s attack on a Republican (because, naturally, Stewart found PolitiFact useful) but of the Top 10 politicians caught not telling the truth (or telling a half-truth), the Top 8 are Republicans. It isn’t until you scroll down to number 9 that you get to MoveOn.org. There’s a total of 14 listed here, only 3 are Democrats and 2 of them earned a “Mostly True.”
Also, note the complete absence of President Obama and Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV). I’m sorry, but that’s just bizarre.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to go through all 14 examples and individually investigate PolitiFact’s findings. But the message on their front page is glaringly obvious.
In PolitiFact’s defense, this is a one-time glance. In my defense, this was not cherry-picking. I’ll keep an eye on them and so should you — on Twitter and Facebook and elsewhere.
We are all activists now. Get involved. Call these people out. Spread the word.
At the risk of sounding corny, this is about our country and it is everyone’s job to watch the self-appointed Watchmen.
