President Obama attended a town hall with Univision today and, in a surprising move, the television network was tough on the president about Operation Fast and Furious.
Univision asked the president if Holder should be fired because he was unaware of the operation. How did President Obama respond? With a lie.
“Well, first of all, I think it’s important for us to understand that the Fast and Furious program was a field-initiated program begun under the previous administration,” said President Obama.
Fast and Furious started in November 2009. Someone needs to remind President Obama he was president at that time, not President Bush. He also claimed Mr. Holder has held people accountable for their actions. However, no one has been held accountable. People have been allowed to resign quietly or reassigned to another position. No one has been fired. No one has been charged with any crime.
President Obama also had the audacity to claim Mr. Holder “is passionate about making sure that we’re preventing guns from getting into the wrong hands.” This is also not true. He wants to avoid talking about Fast and Furious.
Then they asked him about releasing the documents because if there isn’t anything to hide, just release the documents. President Obama tried to insist thousands of documents were released, but Univision corrected him and said not all documents were turned over. They’ve released only a handful out of the hundreds of thousands. Holder hid under Obama’s executive privilege.
Univision also challenged him on the investigation and asked him about a complete independent investigation into Fast and Furious apart from the IG report. President Obama insists this investigation was independent enough, but failed to mention the fact that Michael Horowitz was only assigned in March. Until then it was Cynthia Schnedar, an ex-employee and very good friend of Mr. Holder.
President Obama appeared rattled through the interview and Univision deserves a lot of credit for asking him about Fast & Furious.
