Univision Staffer Calls Marco Rubio 'Loser'

A top assistant to Daniel Coronell, Univision’s vice president of news, took to Facebook to attack Senator Marco Rubio (R, FL) after Rubio spokesman Alex Burgos announced that the Senator was going to give the Republican reply to Obama’s upcoming State of the Union Address.

After Burgos announced that Senator Rubio would give the first bi-lingual GOP response, top Univision Angelica Artiles called Rubio a “loser.”

“Oh. wow, the loser is going to speak after our President,” Artiles posted to Facebook on Wednesday, February 6. “Anything to get publicity. Ask him to do us a favor and stay home that night,” she poked.

According to Miami Herald blogger Marc Caputo, this anti-Rubio sentiment is the “prevailing political feeling among Univision’s higher ups at its Doral headquarters.”

The Univision employee went on post after post calling Republicans names–like mojoncitos [or “little turds”], riffraff, and losers–and attacking anyone with whom she doesn’t agree.

At one point during her Facebook attacks, Artiles told Carlos Curbelo,, a Miami-Dade Republican School Board member, “the riffraff might be you. I haven’t said anything ‘riffraffy.’ Wake up and join the Democratic Party unless you want to remain losers all your lives.”

Curbelo slammed Artiles in return, saying, “I think it’s riffraff to call ‘losers’ people who disagree with you on political matters. Your tone is deplorable and it’s that same tone that keeps our elected officials from agreeing to take on great challenges that threaten the viability of our country. Lastly, even more riffraff is the use of the word ‘little turds’ to refer to professionals and parents who are expressing their opinions.”

Amusingly, the Univision worker kept calling Rubio a “loser,” seemingly failing to understand that he’s won his elections. Far from being a “loser,” Rubio has been one of the more successful Republicans of late.

Unsurprisingly, Artiles deleted all her comments after other Facebook users began to confront her on her attacks.

Univision has a contentious history with Senator Rubio, most especially with its threats about airing a report about the decades old arrest of the Senator’s brother-in-law for drugs unless, the Senator was told, he would agree to an interview with the Spanish language station.

Isaac Lee, Univision’s news chief, initially denied claims that he was trying to blackmail Rubio into an interview, but later admitted that he did, indeed, offer the Senator “a choice,” either submit to an interview or the brother-in-law story would air.

Univision is, of course, a big supporter of Barack Obama and is owned by Haim Saban, one of Obama’s top donors. In return for Saban’s million dollar donations, President Obama appointed his wife, Cheryl, to a post as U.S. representative to the United Nations.

This story is yet another example of how biased Univision is toward Obama’s side of the aisle.

As Carlos Curbelo told the Herald, “I was shocked to learn this was a Univision Network employee. This again points to an unfortunate anti-Rubio, anti-Republican culture at Univision which threatens the network’s credibility and raises serious doubts about its political impartiality.”
