WaPo Stealth Corrects Menendez Defense Piece

The once-legendary Washington Post has been caught once again correcting a high-profile article without noting the correction. The Daily Caller reports that in an investigative piece looking into the prostitution scandal surrounding Sen. Robert Menendez, the original Post article read:

[T]he women’s videotaped claims, with their faces obscured, were played on the conservative Web site The Daily Caller. The news site reported that ‘the two women said they met Menendez around Easter at Casa de Campo, an expensive 7,000-acre resort in the Dominican Republic.

Later, after some pushback from the Daily Caller, the Post posted a stealth correction, without notifying its readers any change to the story had been made:

[T]he videotaped claims of two women, made with their faces obscured, were posted on the conservative Web site the Daily Caller[.]

The edit is important because the Post’s original article makes it sound with certainty that its reporting proves that the Daily Caller had been duped by these same prostitutes. Since the original article published, though,  the Daily Caller has aggressively pushed back against that claim and provided evidence that the prostitutes recanting their claims to the Post are not the same prostitutes the Daily Caller interviewed back in November when they broke this story.  

Regardless, for the Post to go back and memory-hole their original report as though its direct attack against the Daily Caller never happened — to manufacture a lie that the article always said what it said — is unethical and dishonest.

What’s even more remarkable is that the very same Post that spends a lot of time lecturing others on the ethics of journalism has done this before. In October of 2011, I busted the Post red-handed scrubbing numerous errors in a high-profile hit-piece launched against Sen. Marco Rubio.
