Timing is everything. Chris Hayes used his barely-watched primetime MSNBC show on Monday night to accuse congressional Republicans of wanting people to die in the streets without any health care merely because they expressed concerns over the nightmare of implementing the Affordable Care Act.
Using extreme and emotional rhetoric Hayes claimed Republicans had no regard for peoples’ lives and instead were cravenly political and callous to Americans dying for Obamacare to finally take care of them. “I mean, think about how perverse that is. We’re the Republican Party and we’re here to break things. But they’re not just playing politics. They are playing with people’s lives.”
“If you were to sketch the worst caricature of a Republican, you’d describe him as maniacally obsessed with destroying Barack Obama, cruelly indifferent to the fates of the non-rich, cartoonish villain who wants to dash people’s hopes of finally getting affordable health insurance purely out of spite. And yet here we are with Republicans in 21 states and 6 still up in the air looking to deny low-income residents federally funded health coverage. It’s not just at the state level. In the Senate, Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn are sending letters to professional sports leagues like the NFL and NASCAR telling them not to cooperate with any promotion about upcoming health care implementation warning the leagues against taking sides on Obamacare. We are seeing an entire national party dedicated to a form of sabotage. The intent of which is to make sure that the ordinary working people have a hard time getting health insurance. That’s it. I mean, think about how perverse that is. We’re the Republican Party and we’re here to break things. But they’re not just playing politics. They are playing with people’s lives.”
One day later, President Obama announced a one year delay in implementing a critical component of Obamacare, the employer mandate. Believe it or not, there doesn’t appear to have been an angry monologue on Tuesday night’s “All In.” There doesn’t seem to be any accusations of President Obama “playing with people’s lives” due to this cravenly political move.
A review of the Twitter stream for fans of the show seems to reveal the majority of Tuesday’s show focused on Immigration and Edward Snowden. Even though Hayes was positioned with his 8:00 PM show to be on the cutting edge of analysis on Tuesday’s late afternoon announcement by the White House.
