Media Blame Recession For Decline In Newsroom Racial Diversity

The Atlantic reports that an annual study released by the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) reveals that, since 2008, the percentage of minority staffers at daily newspapers has gone backwards. Though non-whites make up around 37 percent of the American population, the ASNE study reveals that minorities only make up 12.37 percent of newsroom employees. Moreover, that number has fallen from 13.73 percent in 2008.

The culprit for this backward slide? According to The Atlantic’s headline and those interviewed it is the Great Recession.

Sounds like more Bush-blaming to me, but you can read the rationalizations here.
