Failing Lefty Israeli Newspaper Runs Porn Ad

Ha’aretz, Israel’s leftist daily newspaper, is so desperate for attention that it decided to promote its new website with a racy video showing a couple in many different sexual positions while the male complains that things are getting boring. This is followed by a slogan saying, “Life is not as interesting as Ha’aretz‘s new website.”

The desperation of the leftist paper comes from the fact that as of 2010, it only garnered between 6-7% of Israeli readers, unlike Yedioth Ahronoth, (35%),  Yisrael Hayom, (35%) and Maariv, (12.5%)

Israeli women’s groups in Israel were furious; the deputy speaker of the Knesset, Pnina Tamano-Shata wrote a letter to Ha’aretz publisher Amos Schocken demanding that the video, which has more than 100,000 hits, be canned, as well as demanding an apology.

Apparently many Ha’aretz staff members have circulated a petition requesting the video be removed. It read:

The newspaper we are all proud of elected to advertise itself in one of the most despicable, sexist commercials seen in recent time, with an ad that promotes pornographic content in the vein of edgy appeal to younger audiences. … We’re ashamed today to work in a newspaper that under false pretense of irony and sophistication (with questionable quality) showcases a silent female as a sexual object.
