Martin Bashir, who resigned from MSNBC on Wednesday, was previously suspended from ABC for lewd comments he made about Asian-American women and journalist Juju Chang in 2008.
According to Fox News, while at ABC, Bashir suggested that he had an erection while addressing an Asian American Journalists Association convention in Chicago and while sharing the stage with his 20/20 colleague Juju Chang:
As New York magazine reported in a brief and little-noticed item, Bashir said that “I’m happy to be in the midst of so many Asian babes.” And, he added, “I’m happy that the podium covers me from the waist down.” He said a speech should be “like a dress on a a beautiful woman — long enough to cover the important parts and short enough to keep your interest–like my colleague Juju’s.” Some audience members booed, the magazine said.
Bashir later wrote an apology to the Asian-American group, calling his own remarks “tasteless” and describing it as a “moment of stupidity.” Still, ABC suspended Bashir after the incident. This is the same Bashir who just resigned from MSNBC after suggesting that someone should urinate and defecate in Sarah Palin’s mouth.
Bashir was a former co-anchor of Nightline. MSNBC did not discipline Bashir immediately after his remarks, and the network still has not apologized to Palin.
