SNL's Lorne Michaels: Dems Can't Take a Joke

The Emmy-award winning producer of Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels, confessed that mocking Republicans is easier than making fun of Democrats.

The creator of SNL and current executive producer of Jimmy Fallon Live told vulture.com that, “Republicans are easier for us than Democrats.” He added, “Democrats tend to take it personally; Republicans think it’s funny.”

As of late, Michaels admits that their comedy skits have become less political because he thinks that the country has lost interest in it. The latest routines involve skits about celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Alex Rodriquez. “I can’t tell you why. It’s no less important, but in some way you can’t do health care more than twice, at which point there’s just nothing left. But Jay Pharoah does a really good Obama.”

SNL has produced a handful of voices who are sympathetic to conservatives over the years, including Victoria Jackson, Jon Lovitz, Dennis Miller, Norm MacDonald, Colin Quinn, and Adam Sandler. Michaels insists that the show is not agenda driven. “Our job–and it sounds too grand to say and none of us ever say it–is speaking truth to power. I’m registered as an Independent, not because everything that we do would be undermined if we were partisan–Jon Stewart has that role. Us? Theoretically, whoever it is in power, we’re against them.”
