Jill Abramson 'Unexpectedly' Replaced as NYT Executive Editor

The New York Times itself is reporting that its own Executive Editor, Jill Abramson, is being “unexpectedly” replaced by Dean Baquet. The Times says the reasons “aren’t immediately clear.”

Jill Abramson, the executive editor of The New York Times, is unexpectedly leaving the position and will be replaced by Dean Baquet, the managing editor of the newspaper, the company said Wednesday.

Ms. Abramson, 60, a former investigative correspondent and Washington editor who was appointed to lead the newsroom in 2011, was the first woman to serve in the top job. …

The reasons for the switch were not immediately clear.

According to numerous sources live-Tweeting the announcement, publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. told the staff that decision was based in part on improving the “management of the newsroom.”
