Shaun King Tells MSNBC: My Dad’s Black but I’m Not Giving You Any Details and You Can’t Ask Questions

The story of Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King just keeps getting weirder: today on MSNBC Joy Reid said she has spoken to King and he has finally answered the race question, claiming that his father is black.

But King says he won’t share any more details than that, and no one can ask any further questions about it, which leaves reporters in the same position we were in before: Shaun King has investigated Shaun King and found Shaun King biracial.

Reid spent most of the segment smearing conservative outlets as unreliable sources. The problem for this defence is, King’s say-so has been unreliable in the past. King now appears to claim his biological father is someone other than the man listed on his birth certificate, which prompts the question: why did King evade journalists for months on this question? Why not just tell us what he’s now claiming?

Black organisations are calling on King to submit to a DNA test or produce evidence his father is black. One black conservative group has pledged $25,000 to Black Lives Matters if he does. Meanwhile, his wife has penned a Facebook post declaring there is more to the story–but that no one can hear it “out of respect for his mother.”

Shaun is a flawed and imperfect man. He has made many mistakes. Just like me and just like you. But regarding his race, he has never lied. Not once. His story is beautifully difficult, and painful. And I’ve actually encouraged him to tell it publicly because it is a unique expression of this country’s sordid and ridiculous history with race. But it’s his story to tell. On his own terms. When he’s ready to tell it.

A police report from 1995 listed King as white, and friends and family members told CNN and Breitbart yesterday that he is white. Absent DNA evidence, it’s his word against theirs–and his word has been proven time and again to be spectacularly flaky.
