South Africa's domestic violence disaster

It is shocking that Oscar Pistorius would (allegedly) murder his girlfriend. But such events are all too common in South Africa. In December, I wrote about a South African friend who was stabbed to death by her husband.

That culture of domestic violence is not a black/white issue. It persists throughout the country. There are no easy solutions to it–and banning guns is not the answer, since men seem willing to hurt women with whatever comes to hand. We don’t have the same cultural problem in the USA, but culture is part of the problem.
