Former two-term City Commissioner and tea party favorite, Ed Braddy unseated incumbent Craig Lowe in Tuesday’s runoff for Gainesville mayor.
With all 35 precincts reporting, Braddy had 7,258 votes (55 percent) to Lowe’s 6,007 (45 percent).
Braddy entered Tuesday’s runoff having garnered the most votes in the March 19 mayoral election. Braddy received 4,649 votes, or about 38 percent of the vote, while Lowe received 4,418 votes, or about 37 percent of the vote.
Lowe, a member of Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns group, made the news, two days after last month’s election when he was charged with a DUI.
MAIG member and Gainsville, FL Democrat Mayor Craig Lowe was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and property damage after police found him asleep in his car at the scene of a crash.
Police said Lowe appeared intoxicated and his Honda Civic was badly damaged, according to WKMG in Orlando.
The Gainesville Democrat faces a mayoral runoff election on April 16. His arraignment is scheduled for April 11, according to the Florida Alligator.
Lowe was one of 30 mayors featured in a recent ad released by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun-restriction lobbying group led by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Lowe’s campaign had out fundraised Braddy’s campaign, receiving 163 contributions totaling $34,235 to Braddy’s 225 contributions totaling $31,314.
