In a recent interview on the “To the Point” television show in Nevada, Senator Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said that getting 60 votes on the immigration bill would be “pretty easy.”
“I think we have 60 votes. Remember, we start out at 55 Democrats. I think the most I’ll lose is two or three. Let’s say I wind up with 52 Democrats,” counted Reid. Since he already has four “Gang of 8″ Republicans, only four more votes are needed.
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) told Univision last week that they did not have the 60 votes. Reid clarified Menendez’ statement by saying “what [Menendez] wanted to say is they haven’t done a whip count on this yet.”
The final immigration bill facing the Senate is now available. The Senate is set to take up the bill after they return from their break and deal with the farm bill.
