Gov. Perry Not Backing Down: Lawmakers Will Return Next Week

Governor Rick Perry has scheduled a new special session of the legislature to begin next week. He announced that he will once again be asking the legislature to pass SB5, the bill which Sen. Wendy Davis successfully filibustered last night.

In a statement published by the Dallas Morning News Perry announced “Through their duly elected representatives, the citizens of our state
have made crystal clear their priorities for our great state. Texans value life and want to protect women and the unborn.”

In a nod to the crowd of protesters who disrupted the state Senate for more than an hour last night, Perry wrote “We will not allow the breakdown of decorum and decency to prevent us from doing what the people of this state hired us to do.”

Senator Wendy Davis has been embraced as a hero by the far left and the media. Last night she claimed in her twitter feed that the bill was dead. However large majorities of the American people support elements of the bill. Unless Democratic legislators resort to extreme tactics used by fellow legislators in Wisconsin in 2011, e.g. fleeing the state, it seems unlikely they can prevent the bill’s eventual passage.
