‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’ Arrives On Bluray Sept. 10

The new me is weird. I used to love movies and despise television. Between 1990 and 2010, I’ll bet I followed a total of 5 television shows. After 1998, I followed exactly one: “The Sopranos.” Now I am much more into dramatic television; and although my thirty-year-old love affair with movies lives on, I have no warmth for Hollywood’s bloated, starless, pseudo-edgy new releases. There are, however, exceptions.

As a Trekkie involving anything with James T. Kirk, I am looking forward to the second installment in director J.S. Abrams “Star Trek” reboot. It took a few viewings for me to warm up to the first, but now I’m a fan and anticipating the Bluray release of the second installment.

The key will be to remain true to the original characters, who are as much a part of our culture as Marilyn Monroe and Bogart, and their complicated relationships. Also the values of the original “Star Trek”: Muscular diplomacy, a belief in liberty and the dignity of the individual.

Oh, and a lot of kick-ass action.

Abrams’ decision to set his “Trek” in an alternate universe, which allows him to ignore the complicated mythology already in place, was genius.

For you super geeks, here are the special feature in the upcoming Bluray release (there will also be a 3D version made available):

Creating the Red Planet – Experience the creation of a never-before-seen alien world, as featured in the action-packed opening sequence of the film.

Attack on Starfleet – Go behind the scenes with the cast and filmmakers and witness the creation of the shocking attack on Starfleet Headquarters.

The Klingon Home World – Discover the stunning world of Kronos, and see how the filmmakers reinvented the Klingons for a new generation.

The Enemy of My Enemy – Find out how, and why, the identity of the film’s true villain was kept a mystery to the very end.

Ship to Ship – An in-depth and thrilling look at the filming of the iconic space jump sequence, which both defied the laws of physics and pushed the limits of visual effects.

Brawl by the Bay – Sit in with Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch as they revisit their intense preparation for the film’s breathtaking climax.

Continuing the Mission – An inspiring look at the partnership between the film’s crew and the organization that assists returning veterans to find meaningful ways to contribute on the home front.
