Democrats Turn on San Diego Mayor Filner, Calls Increase for Resignation

Pressure for San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign is increasing, amidst recent allegations of sexual harassment. Filner was elected mayor of San Diego this past November after serving ten, yes ten terms, in the US Congress.

Thursday morning, three high profile San Diego politicos who were well established allies of Filner, articulated sexual harassment claims involving “numerous” female employees of the Mayor.  The allegations were described as  “unfortunate and reprehensible circumstances.” Filner responded by telling NBC 7 news  “there are no allegations to respond to.”

However, the Mayor quickly changed his tune and released a DVD (yes, a DVD!?!?) with an apology, claiming that he needed “help” and said that “I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times I have intimidated them.”  Keep in mind this guy as been a public servant for more than 20 years!

Now the Democrat establishment is turning on Filner.  Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzales, former CEO of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council along with City Council President Todd Gloria and Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins have called for Filner to resign.  The mayor’s Chief of Staff Vince Hall just resigned this afternoon saying “As a lifelong activist for women’s rights and equality, I feel I must resign effective today.”

Filner ran against former City Councilman Republican Carl DeMaio for San Diego Mayor last year and has only held office for 7 months.
