Middle School Teacher Suspended for Showing Rap Video Supporting Same-Sex Marriage

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. – A middle school teacher has been suspended for showing a music video that supports same-sex marriage to an eighth-grade social studies class at West Alexander Middle School.

The video in question: Macklemore’s “Same Love,” which according to the Seattle rap star was written to support a referendum in Washington State to legalize same-sex marriage.

But some parents and school board members questioned the teacher’s judgement for using the classroom to advance a social agenda.

One parent, Adrienne Chapman, told a local reporter, “I don’t want this kind of thing indoctrinated on my child, just my Christianity beliefs. This goes against it and the way you try to raise your child.”

Emma Vernon, whose granddaughter attends the school said, “Everybody should have their own rights, but I don’t think a middle school is the place to promote it.”

The school district did not disclose the name of the teacher nor the length of the suspension.
