PALMVIEW, Texas — Authorities in this border city continue to investigate a deadly drive-by shooting at an HEB supermarket.

The shooting took place on Monday shortly after 3:15 a.m., Palmview Police Chief Chris Barrera said during a news conference that was streamed online.

The suspect shot from outside of the store into the employee break-room where he struck four.

Palmview Police with the help of Texas State Troopers and Peñitas police responded to the HEB for a call of an active shooter, Barrera said.

“They went into the building to attempt to locate the active shooter,” the chief said. “They determined that the active shooter had already left. At that time they found four individuals who had been shot. Three of the individuals were transported to a local hospital, one of them was already deceased.”

According to Barrera, the suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Raul Lopez who is facing one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Lopez, who is also an employee at HEB, called authorities and turned himself in shortly after the shooting. The motive for the murder points to the suspect suffering a form of paranoia.

“He felt everyone was out to get him, the employees were not targeted in any way,” the chief said.
