Reports that San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick is being investigated for an incident that may have been sexual in nature may cost the star quarterback a huge payday.
According to NFL.com, the 49ers have put a hold on contract negotiations until the matter is resolved.
Kaepernick is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, which means, per the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, he is eligible to renegotiate his deal. His initial asking price was reportedly in the neighborhood of $20 million a year. According to the Miami Police Department’s “incident report,” Kaepernick
Kaepernick Tweeted that some of the charges being made by TMZ and other outlets involving an alleged sexual assault “never happened”:
The charges made in the TMZ story and other stories I’ve seen are completely wrong. They make things up about me that never happened. I take great pride in who I am and what I do, but I guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up. I want to thank all of the people who have shared their encouraging sentiments. I assure you that your faith is not misplaced.
Kaepernick was a second-round draft pick out of Nevada and signed a standard four-year deal worth $5.1 million. He is scheduled to make $973,766 this year but will make considerably more once negotiations pick back up if he is cleared of wrongdoing.
