Sunday saw several brush fires break out near homes southern California, from San Diego to Los Angeles, in drought conditions that have local authorities bracing for potentially devastating fires in the months ahead.
One fire, which burned across five acres in the Los Angeles community of Pacific Palisades, was contained by firefighters after more than two hours Sunday afternoon, according to a report from the local CBS News affiliate.
Another, which burned two acres near San Diego’s Carmel Valley neighborhood, also started after noon on Sunday but was contained even more rapidly, with no damage to homes reported in either case.
Fires have been breaking out across California at twice the normal rate, according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, and firefighting crews are already pulling 24-hour rotations to prevent large outbreaks.
