Woman Goes into Labor on San Diego Highway

A woman has reportedly gone into labor in a pickup truck on San Diego’s I-805 highway after just 26 weeks–13 weeks prematurely–according to local ABC News affiliate 10News.com.

The woman was a passenger in the truck which suffered a flat tire, preventing it from reaching the hospital in time. She was said to have gone into labor around 2:15 am on Monday.

California Highway Patrol officers appeared on the scene expecting to deliver a baby girl, but she never arrived. The woman has since been transported to a hospital via ambulance but it is still unknown whether or not she has given birth.

One in nine babies is born prematurely in the United States, according to data released in 2013 from the March of Dimes. Although the U.S. has seen a steady decline in premature births–with an all-time low for the sixth consecutive year–that figure still remains higher than that of most developed nations, according to the non-profit organization’s website.
