United Nations Human Rights Council Selects Controversial California Professor to Head New Post

The wife of notoriously anti-Israel human rights “expert”, terror apologist, and former United Nations official Richard Falk has assumed a new post at the UN, inciting protest and deep concern from both the United States and other organizations that stand in stark opposition to this move.

Hilal Elver–a research professor for climate change at the publicly-funded University of California Santa Barbara–who reportedly carries a similar reputation to her husband, has been appointed as the UN’s new Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, according to foxnews.com.

The Obama administration expressed their worry over her installment in a statement from the U.S. Mission in Geneva which made light of several of Elver’s publications that include “biased and inflammatory views regarding the United States and the State of Israel,” and which highlighted the fact that “these views run counter to…the work of a Special Rapporteur.”

The administration also cited her “lack of relevant experience” in the area of food which “raises questions about her readiness for this assignment.”

UN Watch, a United Nations watchdog group wrote a letter on May 5 to U.S. Ambassador to the U.N Samantha Power detailing a list of inflammatory remarks from Elver which include, but are not limited to, Elver’s accusation of Israel as being “water apartheid” and of committing “genocide” in addition to her belief–like her husband Richard Falk–that the U.S., particularly the George W. Bush administration, was involved in the 9/11 terror attacks, and warned that her appointment would “undermine the interests of the United States.”

Power, earlier this year, reportedly put out a statement blasting Elver’s husband Falk for his “‘relentless anti-Israel bias’ and ‘noxious’ perpetuation of 9/11 conspiracy theories, calling his departure ‘long overdue,'” according to foxnews.com.

Falk–who has been condemned by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon–has been replaced with reportedly expressed pro-Palestinian Indonesian diplomat Makarim Wibisono, who will serve the designated six-year-term as the UN Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur on Israel.
