After banning her picture for violating school policy by wearing a tuxedo instead of a dress, a San Francisco Catholic high school has issued an apology to graduating senior Jessica Urbina and has agreed to include her picture in its yearbook, according to the San Francisco Chronicle‘s website SFGate.com.
Hundreds of Urbina’s classmates at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory rallied behind her, protesting the school’s omission by wearing ties and bowties to school last week, prompting a social media campaign. The movement triggered a lengthy apology by school administrators who said “our policy was wrong” and that they felt remorse for having forgotten to communicate to Urbina and her family their decision to omit her photo months ago.
The incident has caused the school to change its policy which requires girls to wear dresses and boys to wear tuxedos for their graduation photos. “As a school, we must better learn how to support our students who are navigating issues of gender identity,” an administrator said.
The school did not say exactly how they plan on including Urbina’s picture in the yearbook which is due out this week.
