Marine Jailed in Mexico Is 'Upbeat,' but Has yet to Counter Charges Against Him

U.S. Marine reservist Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi is “upbeat” after three months in a Mexican jail, but his “defense still has not submitted evidence to the court to counter the prosecutor’s evidence.”

According to News Channel 3, Jill Tahmooressi–Andrew’s mother–told CNN that her son is currently on his third attorney, and that “The first two defense attorneys were dismissed by the family after a conflict of how to proceed with the Marine’s legal defense.”

But Andrew is now represented by “Tijuana-based lawyer Fernando Benitez,” and Jill says her son is far more upbeat because of it.

Jill said, “With Mr. Benitez on the case, it’s a good thing. He’s a veteran Tijuana attorney not fearful to take on high-profile cases. His strategy is competent.”

On April 1, Andrew Tahmooressi was jailed in Mexico for weapons charges “after driving his truck into Tijuana–he says accidentally–with three personal firearms,” all of which “were legally registered in the United States.”
