Good Samaritan Beaten, Killed After Intervening To Stop Assault On Woman

A good Samaritan who intervened to stop the assault of a 35-year-old woman at a gas station was brutally beaten and left in a roadway, where he was run over and killed on June 30.

According to KCRA.com, 49-year-old Nathan Halsted intervened when “he came to the aid of a woman” allegedly being beaten by “18-year-old twin brothers Gerald and Jared Smith.” Halsted was “punched, kicked, and stomped for several minutes before being run over” by a “driver [that] did not see him” in the road.

The Smith brothers left the scene, “but were arrested [July 2] on suspicion of assault and murder after investigators lifted fingerprints from a vehicle that stopped to intervene.”

Police have a surveillance video of Halsted being punched. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said the Smith boys were “like an animal pursuing prey… If one person walked by, they went after them.”
