California: a Tale of Four Governors in Four Days

California Governor Jerry Brown is headed to Mexico on Sunday.

Jonathan Renner, the governor’s legal affairs secretary, prepared a memorandum for Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and other legislative leaders stipulating who will take over as governor while he is gone, according to the Sacramento Bee

While the lieutenant governor is used to being acting governor while Brown is away, Newsom himself is leaving town on Tuesday.

That means that Newsom will be acting governor from Sunday until Tuesday morning. After that, Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg will step in as acting governor from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Governor Brown is scheduled to return from Mexico on Wednesday, although he will reportedly not be back until late in the day.

That presents a problem for Steinberg, who will also leave the state on Wednesday. While Steinberg is gone and before Brown returns, Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins will serve as acting governor during the day on Wednesday.

Mercifully, a spokesman for Atkins told the Bee she has no plans to leave the state at this time.
