Breastfeeding Rooms Now Required at CA Airports

Gov. Jerry Brown decreed on Friday that, starting in 2016, all of California’s major airports will be required to provide a private room for mothers to breastfeed or pump milk.

AB1787, sponsored by Democratic Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal of Long Beach, mandates that the room includes a chair and an electrical outlet for the pump. Moreover, new terminals must also include sinks.

According to ABC10 News, Lowenthal said that breast feeding mothers should enjoy comfortable facilities and not be confined to the restrooms.

The new law defines a major airport as one that “conducts commercial operations and that has more than 1,000,000 enplanements a year.” ABC10 reported that only San Francisco International is currently offering acceptable breastfeeding accommodations.
