On October 24 Marcelo Marquez shot and killed one sheriff and one deputy, and wounded another deputy and a civilian in the Sacramento area.
The shooting began around 10:20 a.m. and Marquez was captured around 4 p.m. He is described “as a Hispanic male in his 30s.”
According to the Huffington Post, the carnage began when Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver approached a suspicious vehicle in a Motel 6 parking lot. Marquez was in the car and he shot the Oliver in the head before the officer had time to react.
Oliver died from his wound.
Marquez and his female passenger then fled the scene and shot a civilian in the course of carjacking a vehicle. They then fled toward Auburn.
Marquez and the accompanying female stopped somewhere to change clothes. At approximately 12:20 p.m. two Placer County Deputies engaged the couple. The Sacramento Bee reports that Marquez shot both deputies, one of whom died.
The female accompanying Marquez was apprehended at some point after the deputies were shot, and Marquez fled into “a residential area near Placer High School,” where he, too, was eventually apprehended.
Reports have yet to indicate whether Marquez was legally in the United States.
