Pomona Police Officer Killed, LASD Homicide Investigating

In the early Tuesday morning hours of October 28, a Pomona, California Police Department officer was shot in the chest while serving a search warrant together with a joint task force involving the Pomona Police Department, the Montebello Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The officer was rushed to a local hospital and went straight into surgery, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) release said. The officer, Shaun Diamond, died early Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“At the direction of LASD Homicide Bureau, 36 year-old David Martinez, a resident of San Gabriel, was booked by Montebello Police Department for Attempt Murder on a Peace Officer. He is being held in lieu of four million dollars bail,” the LASD told reporters.

“Suspect Martinez’ criminal history includes assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence,” an updated release stated.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the gunman who allegedly shot the Pomona police SWAT officer in the shootout “has been identified by authorities as a 36-year-old member of a “dangerous” motorcycle gang.”

According to the Times‘ report, the wounded officer is a 15-year law enforcement veteran who is now recovering in intensive care. “The officer’s family has been flown from Orange County to the Pasadena hospital, officials said” at a press conference on Tuesday.

The investigation into the shooting is in early stages and details continue to develop.

The incident comes on the heels of the deadly shooting of two Sheriff’s deputies, one from California’s Sacramento County, the other from Placer County, late last week.
