Rioters protesting the non-indictment of Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri ravaged Oakland, California for the third successive night Wednesday as outgoing mayor Jean Quan struggled to contain the second major outbreak of riots during her term.
In 2011, the Occupy Oakland riots were among the most violent of all Occupy protests in the country.
On Wednesday, roughly 150 protesters met at 7 p.m. in downtown Oakland, then marched to West Oakland. Despite a police presence, rioters shattered windows at an Arco gas station and at a repair shop on West Grand, shattered the windshield of a car, and tagged several buildings.
That wasn’t all, according to the San Francisco Chronicle; the rioters set a rolling dumpster on fire and pushed it down the street. After destroying West Oakland, the marauders headed back downtown, smashing windows, including the windows at the Oakland Tribune. One rioter, disappointed, said, “I had a rock. I just couldn’t find a window to throw it through.”
Finally, at 10 p.m., police declared an unlawful assembly and made a few arrests, whereupon the crowd broke up.
On Tuesday night, police arrested 92 people; two Oakland police officers and an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy wre injured. On Monday, 43 people were arrested and three officers were hurt.
