LOS ANGELES, California — The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) who caused a massive downtown Los Angeles fire that destroyed the 7-story Da Vinci apartment complex, melted freeway signs, and damaged local buildings late last year is now set at an unprecedented $170,000.
During a Wednesday morning news conference in front of City Hall. officials revealed that an accelerant was used to start the massive conflagration, which is estimated to have caused damage of up to $30 million. Officials had labeled the fire as an act of arson and suspicion of foul play had been expressed since the beginning of the investigation into the December 8 fire.
The $170,000 figure is a combined reward from a proposed $75,000 by Councilman Jose Huizar which still requires the approval of Los Angeles City Council; an additional $75,000 from the owner of Da Vinci complex, Geoffrey Palmer, who matched the city’s offer; and $20,000 from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) itself.
The LAFD released surveillance video footage which captured the images of two young men who they referred to as potential witnesses in the case in an attempt to “close the loop” in the investigation.
