San Diego State University professor David Blair’s medical marijuana dispensary, “A Green Alternative,” is set to be the first legally operating shop in San Diego since being approved last July and beating a permit challenge.
Blair’s conditional use permit to open his shop in an Otay Mesa strip mall was first granted last October under new rules that the San Diego City Council established. The permitting process began in April 2014. A north San Diego County drug prevention specialist had appealed the permit’s approval.
The San Diego City Planning Commission has since denied the appeal, allowing Blair to move forward with opening his doors. Fox 5 San Diego reported that the hearing officer has approved additional dispensaries while other permit applications are still being considered.
Dispensaries applying for a permit to operate a medical marijuana dispensary in the city of San Diego legally must comply with stringent requirements.
Armed robbers engaged in a shootout with a security guard during the burglary of an illegally operating dispensary last April, the day after legal permitting began in the City of San Diego. The flurry of bullets left one of the robbers dead and the guard injured, but not mortally wounded.
A Union-Tribune report noted the influx of investment groups, “from places outside San Diego, such as Colorado and Los Angeles, [are] trying to secure properties so they can submit applications.”
