One-Quarter of Californians Reject Party Affiliations

The California Secretary of State’s office reported Monday that the number of Californians disdaining party affiliation and choosing “no party preference” has increased dramatically. Over 23 percent of Californians chose “no party preference,” a number swollen by an additional 400,000 Californians joining the ranks of those without party affiliation, according to Capital Public Radio.

Meanwhile, Democratic and Republican party registration have dwindled a total of roughly 300,000 voters. Democrat voters now represent 43 percent of eligible voters; GOP voters total less than 28 percent of the total.

Last November The National Journal quoted the Cook Political Report stating California voter participation plunged 40 percent from 2012 to 2014. The journal added traditional Democratic turnout in heavily Latino districts also dropped precipitously.

Over one-quarter of eligible Californians have no voter registration.
