Sticky, black gobs of tar goo are washing up on southern California beaches–but before climate change activists sound the alarm, experts are saying the phenomenon is completely natural.

As the earth moves on the ocean floor, oil deposits are released, making their way to the surface experts told 10 News. The small pieces of tar eventually reach the seashore with the tide where beachgoers have been discovering the curious material. What starts as soft goo will reportedly turn to hard chunks.

Black blobs of tar have been showing up on beaches from San Diego’s Pacific Beach and Del Mar to Carlsbad. The phenomenon has reoccurred in prior years around this time.
