‘Broga’: Yoga for Men

Yoga is not just for women. A new, less intimidating and more straightforward version of the ancient practice has arrived on the scene and is growing in popularity, particularly with men. It’s called “Broga.”

Broga creator and co-founder Robert Sidoti described it as “a yoga-based fitness program designed for guys but open to all” in an interview with The List TV. He and his fellow Brogis created the program with men in mind, although the classes are open to all and have women turning up, too.

Star athletes like LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal are among a growing number of men who could be seen as pushing for the spark of male involvement in the challenging practice. Yet there are three main things that set Broga apart from traditional yoga:

  1. The music is “strong, empowering, confident, but never top 40”
  2. The dialogue is clear and direct; very similar to the way men communicate
  3. The postures are not as strenuous and challenging as they would in a traditional yoga class.

Over 20 million Americans practice yoga, and there has been a significant uptick in the number of men who have started participating.

Broga could boost male involvement in the exercise, particularly in the greater Los Angeles area.
